Modern Farmhouse Kitchen Ideas in 2024

Home styles have changed over the years. Raise your hand if you remember some of the more eclectic design choices from the early to mid-90s or the midcentury modern aesthetic from the 70s. While both of these have their fans even today, there’s another style that is currently gaining in popularity. We’re talking about the modern farmhouse kitchen.

Now, we understand this is a specific part of your home so it raises an interesting question: is there a difference between a traditional farmhouse kitchen and a modern one? In a word, yes, but there’s more to it than that. For example, what are some ways to incorporate a modern farmhouse kitchen aesthetic into your specific space?

Let’s break apart these ideas and more as we look at the ways a modern farmhouse kitchen can elevate your cooking and dining spaces in your home.

What makes a farmhouse kitchen modern?

First things first though, we think some definitions are in order. Rather than dive right into stylings, we wanted to clarify the word modern in relation to a farmhouse kitchen. So, what makes a farmhouse kitchen “modern” as opposed to “traditional”? Typically, kitchens in the traditional family will feature warm wood. Designers will use natural or rustic elements along with colors and decor meant to evoke a cozy and homey feeling. And last but not least, space is a consideration as well. The area needs to be able to accommodate large families or expansive meals.

In contrast, a kitchen belonging to the modern farmhouse design style will still aim to suggest that same cozy, homey atmosphere but with a sleeker, more refined style. Need a visualization to help clarify things? Imagine one or two neutral shades instead of a whole palette. The modern farmhouse kitchen will incorporate cohesive furniture in place of eclectic or mismatched pieces — not to mention the embracing of a minimalist approach to both the decor and furnishings.

Blending the past and the present

Perhaps a third design style is somewhere in the middle of these two options. Do you love modern features like quartzite countertops, neutral colors, and sleek appliances? These can be combined with natural elements like exposed wood and brick as well as a large, open floor plan. This combination helps to create a space that embraces both sides of the kitchen design coin.

This blending of styles could be referred to as a rustic modern farmhouse kitchen. This design choice features creative choices such as open wood ceiling beams, open shelving, a copper fan cover, and dark cabinet pulls. When paired with an otherwise completely white kitchen, they add a distinctly different flavor to your home. In fact, it’s the balancing act of old and new that will make your kitchen stand out and feel up-to-date yet nostalgic.

How to style a modern farmhouse kitchen?

In the previous section, we talked about a few specific design elements. These are all centered around the permanent features of your space such as the cabinets, counters, sink, and flooring. But there is more to a kitchen than those elements. So, what are some ways that you could finish your modern farmhouse kitchen?

Plants are a great addition to a farmhouse kitchen decorating. Whether you choose small potted herbs, larger plants that you later add to your garden, or even just keep a fresh bouquet of flowers on the island, greenery is a fantastic way to style a modern farmhouse kitchen.

Other design choices such as neutral color options for dishes and a simple neutral floor rug can complete the look. Regardless of the physical features of your space, color goes a long way to make it yours.

To follow the minimalist nature of this kitchen style, small appliances are often stored hidden away in a cupboard with the exception of one or two pieces that can accent your space. Picture a stand mixer or coffee pot that matches the color and aesthetic of the kitchen’s design, with everything else tucked away until needed.

A handful of great modern farmhouse kitchen ideas

We’ve previously mentioned the use of quartzite countertops in modern farmhouse kitchen design. These counters are durable and stylish, giving you a finish that will last your family for years. Or, at the very least, until you’re ready to change the look of your space again.

Likewise, a great apron sink can be one of, if not the, key elements of your modern farmhouse kitchen. We, ourselves, are partial to the look of the Inferno single basin sink by Miseno and the Whitehaven double basin option from Kohler.

Lastly, fixtures. Having the right faucets, drawer pulls, and cabinet knobs will turn all of what we’ve talked about into the perfect oasis for you and your family.
