When it comes to designing kitchens, backsplash tile patterns and installation styles can make a transformative impact. The right tile pattern doesnโt just add character; it can define a roomโs entire atmosphere. Choosing the right backsplash tile for your kitchen brings a customized look that reflects your taste.
My name is Josh Turgut, and I am a designer at My Kitchen and Bath. With years of experience designing kitchens, Iโll guide you through the best tile patterns for various designs and shapes. Whether youโre designing a new kitchen or refreshing only the backsplash, weโll explore popular tile shapes and installation styles that will help you create visually appealing spaces.
The Importance of Tile Patterns and Installation Styles
Beyond aesthetics, tile patterns can influence how spacious or intimate a room feels. Diagonal or chevron layouts, for example, can visually expand the room, making compact kitchens feel larger and stylish. These patterns are especially beneficial in smaller spaces, where maximizing perceived space is essential.
Meanwhile, more simple format backsplash tiles arranged in a straightforward, diagonal, or stacked pattern can create a seamless, uncluttered look that visually opens up the floor, making the room feel even attractive.
In addition, coordinating patterns across different areas, like using similar shapes or complementary layouts on floors, walls, and backsplashesโcreates a harmonious flow within a space. This kind of design continuity can bring balance to a kitchen.
For example, in this kitchen below, I designed for a client in Virginia, pairing a 50% offset subway backsplash tile pattern with a simpler floor layout balanced the design without overwhelming the room.

With all these factors in mind, letโs look at the specific backsplash patterns and installation styles suited to your kitchen.
Tile Patterns for Kitchens
In the kitchen, tile patterns will always have a transformative effect. The backsplash, a high-visibility area, is an ideal spot to experiment with bold patterns and eye-catching designs. On the other hand the floor tile should have a balance of sleek and clean look unless the place is big enough to try different patterns. Choosing the right tile installation style for each area helps you create a cohesive and visually stunning kitchen. Here are some of the top tile patterns for backsplashes, along with tips on where each one works best.
Kitchen Backsplash Tile Patterns
The backsplash tile is a focal point in any kitchen, and the tile pattern you choose can set the tone for the entire space. The right tile for your backsplash definitely matters!
Just want to clarify, doesn’t have to be bold all the time! Sometimes a simple white subway tile is the best. But if you would like to add a characteristics look into your kitchen, this is the area you should work on.
Here are popular backsplash patterns that can add some visual interest to your kitchen.
Herringbone Backsplash Tile
The herringbone pattern is a classic V-shaped layout achieved by arranging rectangular tiles at a 45-degree angle, creating a sense of movement and sophistication. This timeless pattern works exceptionally well for kitchen backsplashes, and the vertical direction can be looking up, down or side in some cases.
Herringbone is particularly striking with subway tiles, where each tileโs angled placement highlights the geometric effect. Some smaller size of the herringbone tiles also comes as a sheet which is ready to install. Using contrasting grout emphasizes this pattern and adding definition to each tile.
Here is an example:
Chevron Tile Backsplash
Similar to herringbone, the chevron pattern also forms a V-shape but with a continuous, uninterrupted line. In a chevron layout, tiles are cut at an angle, resulting in seamless zig-zag lines that create a polished, modern look. This pattern adds a dynamic touch to kitchen backsplashes, drawing the eye and serving as a focal point in the room. Chevron tiles work well with neutral shades or bold colors, depending on the desired design. Homeowners looking for a statement backsplash with contemporary flair will find the chevron pattern ideal for achieving a sleek, cohesive look.
Here is an example of chevron pattern kitchen backsplash:
Subway Tile Backsplash
The subway, or brick pattern, is a classic layout often associated with the โsubway tileโ look. This pattern is typically laid with a 1/2 offset, where each row is staggered by half a tile, mimicking the appearance of brickwork. For a more subtle variation, a 1/3 offset can be used, which offers a slight twist on the traditional layout. Subway tile patterns are timeless, creating a clean and organized look that fits both modern and transitional kitchens. This layout can be customized with bold or neutral grout colors to highlight or soften the tile lines, adding depth to the backsplash without overwhelming the design or can be just simple white on white.
Hexagon Backsplash
Hexagon tiles bring a unique geometric flair to kitchen backsplashes but I personally don’t like them unless it’s a simple white or clean look like below, for the kitchen backsplashes. Hexagon tiles are arranged in neat rows, creating a visually striking honeycomb effect but look a lot better for the bathroom floors or showers.
Also hexagon patterns work better in larger sizes, allowing for either a subtle or bold effect. Contrasting grout can emphasize the tileโs shape, while matching grout creates a seamless look. For homeowners who appreciate a minimalist aesthetic with a touch of character, hexagon tiles add a polished and modern appeal to any kitchen surface can be used for backsplashes.
Picket Tile Backsplash
A picket tile backsplash can be laid out in a few creative ways. When arranged vertically, picket tiles help draw the eye upward, making clearance between the countertop and bottom of the wall cabinets feel taller and adding a sense of spaciousness to smaller kitchens. For a more subtle look, laying them horizontally creates clean, flowing lines that work beautifully in modern or contemporary kitchens like below.
Another option is using the multiple colors on tones on picket tiles creates a visual interest and MSI Tile has a gorgeous option for that.
Unique Pattern Backsplash Tile
For those looking to make a bold statement, unique patterns like below,ย creates a complex design, bringing depth and character to the kitchen. This is probably my favorite one like many designers but using this tiles is not only requires a good design but also requires a exceptional craftsmanship.
Unique patterns often require more planning and precision during installation but result in a stunning visual impact that sets your kitchen apart. These designs work well in both classic and eclectic kitchens, offering a distinctive look thatโs sure to impress.
How to Choose the Right Backsplash Tile Pattern for Your Kitchen
Selecting a backsplash tile pattern is not only about personal taste; it’s all about your personal style. Choosing a design for your kitchen complements the overall decisions youโve made. The kitchen layout, cabinets, countertops, and flooringโthese choices all guide you along the way.

Meanwhile, the size and style of the tiles are also key points. Here are a few considerations to help guide your decision:
- Size of the Kitchen: In smaller kitchens, patterns like herringbone or diagonal layouts can make the space feel more open, adding a sense of depth and movement. In larger kitchens, you have more room to play with intricate designs like subway or picket patterns, which add character without overwhelming the space.
- Color and Grout: Neutral tiles with matching grout create a seamless, minimalist look, while contrasting grout can add definition and emphasize the pattern. For instance, a white subway tile with dark grout has a timeless feel, while bold grout paired with patterned tiles can make the backsplash a standout focal point.
- Overall Style of the Kitchen: Think about your kitchenโs existing style. Sleek, modern kitchens often pair well with patterns like chevron or picket tiles, adding a contemporary touch. Rustic or traditional kitchens, on the other hand, are beautifully complemented by brick or basketweave patterns, which add warmth and a classic feel.

Tile Finish Options: Which One Works Best for Your Kitchen Backsplash?
There are three main finishes to consider for a backsplash which are glossy, matte, and satin finishes and each bring a unique look to your kitchen backsplash.
Glossy finishes are highly reflective, making the kitchen feel brighter and more spacious. Theyโre easy to clean but can show smudges or fingerprints more readily, so they may require more frequent wiping to maintain their shine.
Matte finishes, on the other hand, offer a soft, understated look thatโs perfect for traditional or rustic kitchens. Theyโre great at hiding smudges and water spots, though they may be more challenging to clean if grease builds up, as the surface can trap dirt.
Satin, or semi-gloss finishes, offer a middle ground, with a subtle sheen that adds elegance without the high reflectivity of a glossy finish. Satin tiles are versatile for most kitchen styles and are fairly easy to maintain, combining the benefits of both matte and glossy finishes for a balanced, stylish look.
