Tips to Keep Your Bathroom Clean Longer

Bathroom surfaces can harbor unsavory bacteria, viruses, and mold. Reduce the spread of germs and keep your bathroom clean longer with these tips.

Of all the rooms in your home, the bathroom is one of the most important to keep clean. After all, bathroom surfaces can harbor unsavory bacteria, viruses, and mold. Cleaning the bathroom regularly is the only way to keep it sanitary, but you can do several things to create a more hygienic space with less scrubbing. Reduce the spread of germs and keep your bathroom clean longer with these tips.

  • Install touchless fixtures: Touchless faucets, motion-activated liquid soap dispensers, motion detector lighting, and automatic flush sensors minimize contact with bathroom surfaces. This helps reduce the number of germs lingering in your bathroom and keeps you from spreading them around the house.
  • Replace your bath mats: Fluffy polyester rugs may feel soft underfoot, but plush materials can harbor bacteria and mold. Thin, lightweight bath mats dry quickly, making them a more hygienic choice. If you can’t give up your fluffy carpets, wash them every few weeks to get rid of germs and odors.
  • Add a bidet: Rinsing provides a more effective clean than using toilet paper alone. If you don’t have room for a separate bidet, consider installing a seat attachment to upgrade your standard toilet.
  • Remove excess moisture: Damp bathrooms harbor mold and mildew. To control the humidity, run the bathroom exhaust fan while showering, keep the bathroom door cracked, and open a window, if possible. Also, squeegee the shower door and walls to remove standing water.
  • Ward off shower curtain mold: If you have a shower curtain, stretch it out after showering to help it dry faster. Then, ward off mold growth by spraying the liner several times a month with a bleach-based all-purpose cleaner. Remember to rinse it off before hopping in the shower. Follow this tip, and you won’t have to launder your shower curtain and liner as often.
  • De-clutter the countertop: A tidy counter makes the whole bathroom look and feel cleaner, so tuck away your cosmetics, hair tools, and oral hygiene supplies in the vanity or medicine cabinet.
  • Keep disinfecting wipes nearby: With handy wipes within reach, you can quickly spot clean water marks, toothpaste splatters, and other messes as they occur. This way, your bathroom stays cleaner between formal scrub sessions.
  • Always hang your towels: Terry cloth towels feel great when drying off after a shower, but they’re vulnerable to mildew growth. Hang your towels immediately rather than tossing them on the floor to help them dry faster. If you have no wall space for towel racks, install an over-the-door towel bar or hooks.

These tips for maintaining a clean bathroom are useful, but some bathrooms need more than just a good scrubbing.
