Bathroom Remodeling

This master bathroom remodel in Reston was built around one main goal — creating a true steam shower experience at home.

Instead of just updating finishes, this project focused on turning the shower into a fully enclosed, spa-like space while upgrading the rest of the bathroom to match.

  • Project Overview

    • Location: Reston, VA

    • Project Type: Master Bathroom Remodel w/Steam Shower

    • Scope: Full bathroom renovation with steam shower

Steam Shower Design & Build

The steam shower is the centerpiece of this project and completely changes how the space is used day to day.

We installed a Mr. Steam 5kW steam shower system with AromaSteam, giving the homeowner the ability to enjoy a controlled steam environment with aromatherapy built in. The system is operated through a digital control, making it simple to adjust temperature and timing.

To properly support a steam shower, the entire enclosure was built differently than a standard shower:

  • Floor-to-ceiling tile installation, including the ceiling
  • Fully enclosed frameless glass system up to the ceiling to retain steam
  • Proper waterproofing with cement board and RedGard throughout
  • Custom shower pan with a hexagon mosaic floor for grip and drainage

This isn’t just a visual upgrade — the construction behind it is what makes the steam system perform correctly and last over time.

Built-In Features Inside the Steam Shower

To make the space both functional and comfortable, we added several custom details:

  • Built-in bench with a quartz top for seating during steam use
  • Two large recessed niches for storage
  • Accent tile on the plumbing wall for a subtle focal point
  • Clean Schluter edging for a finished look

Every element inside the steam shower was designed to handle moisture, heat, and daily use while still feeling clean and minimal.

Opening Up the Layout

To make the steam shower work properly and feel comfortable, we reworked the layout of the bathroom:

  • Removed one of the existing shower walls
  • Built a half wall to support the new glass enclosure
  • Installed a full-height frameless glass panel and door

This change made the bathroom feel more open while still keeping the steam contained when in use.

Material Selection

The material palette was chosen to keep the space bright and calm, letting the steam shower remain the focal point.

  • Wall Tile: MSI Eden Dolomite (polished)
  • Floor Tile: MSI Eden Dolomite (matte)
  • Accent Tile: Bianco Dolomite Geometrica
  • Shower Floor: Arabescato Carrara hexagon mosaic

The combination of soft white tones and subtle texture keeps the space visually clean without feeling flat.

Vanity & Supporting Elements

While the steam shower is the highlight, the rest of the bathroom was upgraded to match:

The darker cabinetry adds contrast and grounds the space without taking attention away from the shower.

Lighting & Finishing Work

We added:

  • Six recessed LED lights with dimmer control
  • New GFCI outlets and updated switch locations
  • Fresh paint throughout using Benjamin Moore

Lighting plays a big role in how the steam shower feels, especially when transitioning from bright to a more relaxed setting.

Final Result

This Reston bathroom is no longer just a standard remodel — it’s centered around a fully functional steam shower system that brings a daily spa experience into the home.

With the right construction, materials, and layout changes, the steam shower became the defining feature of the space while still keeping the entire bathroom balanced and practical.
